Samuel Charles Wessel, Greenwood, IN, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023. He was 81 years old. Sam was born in Indianapolis, IN to Louis J. and Pauline R Wessel. He graduated from Manuel High School, class of 1960. Sam served his country in the Navy as a Sergeant serving two tours in Vietnam with the Seabees from 1967-70 when he was honorably discharged. Sam married his wife, Judy Wessel, on October 16, 1970 and together they shared 45 years of marriage until Judy passed away on July 2016. Sam retired after 45 years of service at the Indianapolis Water Company.
Sam was a freemason from early in his life and joined the VFW in 1989. He loved racing at Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP) and enjoyed watching NASCAR and truck racing. Sam loved coaching his kids in different sports. He enjoyed watching football no matter who was playing, but his favorite teams were the Indianapolis Colts and IU. Sam always put family first, and the memories created will now be cherished by those he leaves behind.
Sam is survived by his children, Vicki Poteet, Greg (Christey) Lanham, Samuel Radziwell, Michael (Jody) Radziwell, Richard (Tammy) Radziwell, and Will (Susie) Hinton; his grandchildren, Bryan, Jamie, Paige, Carley, Madeline, Chelsie, Bob, Ava Sarah, Sam, Hayden, Scott, David, Kara, Rishawn, Raley, Colin, Peyton, and Ryan; his siblings, Suzann (Charles) Speer and Denise (Tony) Tyler; his several nieces and nephews.
Sam is preceded in death by his wife Judy, his parents, his children Tony Lanham and Mike Lanham; his siblings, James Wessel, Louise Bohannon, and Richard Wessel. The visitation will be at Forest Lawn Funeral Home Friday, February 24, 2023 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. The funeral service will be Friday, February 24, 2023 at 12:00 pm. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens at 1:00 pm.
