Sheila Jane Harry was born to Lowell and Velma Groff on February 4, 1942, in Champaign, IL. She passed away peacefully at home on July 17th; her family was with her. The family moved to Indianapolis in 1952, and Sheila (who was not fond of traveling) spent nearly all her remaining years in this city. Sheila graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1960. After having various jobs, she settled in at AFNB around 1964 and stayed in banking for the next 40 years, retiring from Chase Bank in 2004.

Sheila’s family was the priority of her life. She was loyal and loving to her friends, but even more so to her family. She wanted everyone to have their needs met, she was happy for you when life was good, and when life was full of trials and difficulties she stood with you. She was a peacemaker and tried to keep the family close. She is predeceased by her husband, Richard Harry, her mother and father, and her brother, David Groff. Sheila has one son Jeffrey VanSlyke (daughter-in-law, Julie), three grandchildren, Rhiannon Frontiero, Rachel Rivera (Sam), and Jeffrey VanSlyke, Jr, five great grandchildren, Hailey, Adam, and Cody Hastings, Dominic and Christian, and two great, great grandchildren, Gwendolyn and Leo Hastings. She leaves behind two sisters, Barbara Chestnet and Carol Stafford (Bill), and a brother Kevin Groff.

Sheila attended Calvary Tabernacle regularly from 1962 to about 2020. When declining health made it difficult to attend, she still went to some services and attended many funerals there of friends she had lost. She made many loved friends at Calvary while working in the Sunday School Office, selling records for visiting ministries, doing her best as a Boy Scout leader, singing in the choir, doing what she could to be faithful to the church while being faithful to the Lord.

Sheila’s life, like everyone’s, came with many trials, but she persevered to overcome them. What she couldn’t overcome, she lived with. She was a grateful person, grateful for what she had, grateful for who she had in her life, but grateful, most of all, for the Lord who made the crooked places in her life straight.
