Obituary

Mrs. Shirley Ann Helfers, of Greenfield, Indiana, passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at the age of 73.

Shirley was born March 5, 1953, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the daughter of the late William P. and Martha (Key) Huff. She was a proud graduate of Ben Davis High School, Class of 1971.

Shirley had been employed as an intake receptionist at IU Health Methodist Hospital, where she retired after 14 years of service. She also faithfully served her community as a bus driver for the Decatur Township School Corporation and as a member of the Decatur Township School Board, reflecting her deep commitment to the well-being and education of local families.

A woman of strong faith, Shirley was a devoted member of Life Church 180 Assembly of God. She was actively involved in women’s ministry and evangelism, sharing her faith and uplifting those around her.

In her leisure time, Shirley found joy in sewing and fashion, bargain shopping, and the simple pleasures of life. She had a special fondness for lace, chocolate, and the color purple—details that reflected her vibrant and warm personality.

Above all, Shirley cherished her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt who found her greatest happiness in the time spent with those she loved, especially her grandchildren.

Shirley is survived by her devoted husband, Paul E. Helfers, Sr.; her children, Sam R. (Mary) Jones, and Paul E. (Joyce) Helfers, Jr.; her grandchildren, Ashley Jane Ward, Amber Jones, Samuel Jones III, Cheyenne (Mark) Asmus, Sierra (Matt) Kunce, Lizzan Olive, and Lori Jones; her great-grandchildren, Hailey Ward, Zoey Ward, Myra Asmus, Channing Wilson, and Christian Kunce; her sister, Linda Brown; and her nephews, Jeramey Wynkoop, Conley Wynkoop.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Hall; her nephews, Joshua Egan and Alex Brown; her uncle, Charles Key; and her aunts, Rachel Carter, Margaret Rowe, Izzy Laubenstein, and Bernadine Rowe.

A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Life Church 180 Assembly of God, 3744 South Lynhurst Drive, Indianapolis, Indiana with Pastor Brian Correll officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather from 11:00 AM until the time of service at the church. Family visitation is from 10:00 to 11:00 am. A meal will follow the service as family and friends continue to honor and remember her life.
