Mr. Stephen Lee Schaler, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on the late evening of Thursday, March 20, 2025. He was 71 years old. Born on December 14, 1953, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Steve was the beloved son of the late Walter and Joan (Altmann) Schaler.

Steve grew up in Indianapolis and graduated from Southport High School with the Class of 1972. He dedicated over 25 years of his life as a heavy equipment operator, working out of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 103 before retiring in 2013. He took pride in his work and valued the camaraderie he found among his fellow union members.

Outside of work, Steve found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved spending time outdoors, whether he was tending to his yard, mowing the lawn, or casting a line while fishing. Many cherished memories were made on his front porch, where he would sit, tell stories (he loved making a short story long) and enjoy the company of family and friends or just watch the traffic pass by. Family was at the heart of everything he did, and he especially treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren, often taking trips to Florida to create lasting memories together.

Holidays held a special place in Steve's heart, particularly Christmas and Easter, which he loved celebrating with his family. He was also a passionate NASCAR enthusiast, a devoted football and Indiana Pacers fan and had a talent for baking cakes, which he delighted in sharing with others.

Steve is survived by his children, Katrina Schaler, Krystal (Justin) Weliver, Kimberlee (Kristy) Schaler, and Kristopher Schaler; his grandchildren, Sean Biggerstaff, Christian Russell, Ayla Schaler and Atlas Schaler and his siblings, Karen (Roscoe) George, Linda (Greg) Gillispie, Julie West, Todd (Becky) Schaler, Laurie (Derek) Crutchfield, and Mike (Kim) Schaler. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Frankie Schaler, as well as several nieces and nephews. Steve was preceded in passing by his parents.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM, Thursday, March 27, 2025 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Greenwood with burial to follow immediately after the visitation.

In honor of Steve's memory, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Indy Honor Flight.
