Obituary

Sylvia Mae Smith, age 95 of Morgantown and formerly of Indianapolis, died Sunday, September 6, 2009 at Brown County Health & Living. Born May 30, 1914, she was the daughter of Charles Corwin and Dessie DeMonia (West) Bowling. On August 15, 1937, she married Oscar Earl Smith who preceded her in death in 2002. Sylvia graduated from Covington High School in 1932. After graduation, she worked at a dentist office. After marriage, Sylvia spent the next years taking care of family and raising her boys. She was a den mother in the Cub Scouts. When the boys were older she worked for a laundermat. She then managed a fashion shop in Meadows Shopping Center and then at another location at Esquire Plaza in Indianapolis. She was an active member of the Delta Sigma Kappa Sorority and belonged to the Order of Eastern Star. Sylvia loved to play Euchre and played the game at several locations. Family and friends were the most important things in Sylvia''s life. Survivors include a son Ralph (Ruth Ann) Smith; 5 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son Robert, who was killed in a trucking accident in 1998; Also by 7 brothers, Monroe, Sam, Guy, Charles, Bill, Marvin (Wick) and Bob. Services will be at 12:00pm Wednesday, September 9th at Forest Lawn Funeral Home 1977 South State Road 135 in Greenwood. Visitation will be from 10:00am until 12:00pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of South Central Indiana at 2626 E. 17th Street Columbus, IN 47201.
