Obituary

Terry Lee Manter of Greenwood, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on September 26, 2026.

Born on May 23, 1950, in Streator, Illinois, Terry was the beloved son of George and Miriam Manter. He graduated from Northwest High School of Indianapolis and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University. These achievements marked the beginning of a life filled with purpose and commitment.

Terry was married to his beloved wife, Kathy (Bainaka) Manter, for 54 beautiful years. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, faith, and family.

Terry’s faith and love for God were the foundation of his life. For more than two decades, he served as Director of Development for Good News Ministries, raising over $20 million to support the homeless and downtrodden of Indianapolis. His work was not just a career, it was a calling that reflected his deep compassion and unwavering commitment to helping others. He and Kathy were longtime members of Indianapolis Baptist Temple before attending Emmanuel Church of Greenwood in recent years. Terry lived his faith through his compassion, generosity, and service to others.

As a lifelong sports enthusiast, Terry proudly cheered for IU, the Indiana Pacers, and the Indianapolis Colts. He shared his love of sports as a coach and athletic director at Indianapolis Baptist High School. He also enjoyed going to the gym, working in the yard, and staying active.

Terry’s wife, his children—Stephanie (Steve) Holloway, Kim (Rusty) Olnick, Katie Byrne, and Terri (Rick Simmons) Pettyjohn—and his 11 grandchildren were the center of his world. He was a devoted grandfather who never missed his grandchildren’s games, events, performances, or other special moments, traveling near and far to support them. His grandchildren knew how proud he was of each of them, and they will carry the memories of his love and unwavering presence throughout their lives. His 11 grandchildren are Caleb Holloway, Savannah Olnick, Russ Olnick, Ashlyn Olnick, Grant (Karre) Byrne, Elijah (Edwina) Byrne, Claire (Jay) Price, Gavin Brady, Nate Pettyjohn, Gabe Simmons, and Caleb Simmons. Terry also cherished his nine great-grandchildren: Seraiah, Luna, Atticus, Terry, Arya, Myles, Travis, Roman, and Aria.

He is survived by his siblings, Gary (Debbie) Manter and Judee (Richard) Roller, along with 19 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Pamela Crouch, and his nephew Joshua McCoy.

Terry’s legacy of love and dedication endures in the hearts of those he leaves behind. His life was a testament to hard work, kindness, and unconditional devotion to family and community.
