Thomas R. "Bob" Welch, 90, of Greenwood, passed away March 16, 2016. The son of Thomas R. Welch, Sr. and Zora Emrich Welch Baker, Bob was born April 12, 1925 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Bob was a World War II veteran, being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy. He was a musician, playing saxophone and clarinet most of his life, where he a member of the Greenwood Community Band. He enjoyed listening to "Big Band and New Orleans" jazz music; feeding animals, especially the birds, squirrels and rabbits. He earned his pilot''s license in the 1960''s.
A devoted son, brother, husband, father and uncle, he was kind, self-deprecating and had a wonderful sense of humor. Bob retired from Allison''s General Motors in July 1986 after 36 years of service.
Bob is survived by his wife, Hazel I. Smith Welch of Greenwood; daughter and son-in-law, Toby Welch (Terry Guolee) of Skokie, IL; grandchildren, Kala and Christopher Guolee, both of Skokie, IL; half-sister, Ann Donati of Lodi, CA; nieces, Brenda (Chuck) Matthews of Bloomington; Shaaron Freeburg of Ramsey, MN and Cindy Cutter of Luck, WI and nephew, Jim Graves. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a sister, Madeline Graves.
Funeral services 2 p.m. Monday, March 21, 2016 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home - 1977 South State Road 135, Greenwood, where friends may call after 12 noon. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood.
