Verna Lillian (Rainey) Barkes, 86, of New Palestine, Indiana passed away on August 11, 2021 surrounded by her family.  She was born March 15, 1935 in Franklin, Indiana to the late Green and Flossie (Eldridge) Rainey.

Verna was a stay at home mom as she received her Elementary Education degree. She continued on to get her Masters degree in Elementary Education while raising 4 children. She taught 4th and 5th grade at Pleasant Run Elementary School for 19 Yrs. She was a long time member of Indianapolis First Church of the Nazarene in which she was a member of the choir. One of her favorite activities was participating in the Annual Living Christmas Tree Choir Performance. Verna was an avid reader, a faithful Christ follower and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Verna is survived by her sons, Tim (Mary Ann) Barkes, Dave (Pam) Barkes, Jon Barkes, Barb Barkes and daughter, Beth (Ken) Eagleson; grandchildren Aaron Barkes, Joshua Barkes, Zachary Barkes, Katie (Justin) Vawter, Kyle (Lauren) Barkes, Connor Barkes, Cameron Barkes, Seth (Emily) Eagleson, Lilly Barkes , Caleb Eagleson and great grandchildren , Ellington Kate Vawter, Kensington Jay Vawter and William Oliver Eagleson
