Obituary

Virgil Raymond Smith, age 86 of Indianapolis, died August 24, 2009 at University Heights Health and Living Center. Born April 9, 1923 in Indianapolis, he was the son of Raymond Delano and Julia Malvina (Clark) Smith. On January 18, 1947 in Indianapolis, he married his wife of 62 years, Carol Marjorie Prather. Virgil was a self employed plastering contractor with his brother Everett for over 40 years. He was a member of the Southport Baptist Church for over 75 years where he served in several positions including Deacon, Trustee and Finance Committee. Virgil also served in the U.S. Army during W.W. II. Survivors include his wife Carol, 4 sons: Daniel (Joan) Smith, Philip (Liz) Smith, Timothy (Judy) Smith and Gregory (Carol) Smith; 2 daughters: Melanie (Ken) Beaumont and Melinda (Dan) Busch. Also surviving are one brother, Everett L. Smith, one sister, Vivian Lucille (Wesley) Charpie and one brother-in-law, Richard (Carol) Prather, 13 Grandchildren and 13 Great-Grandchildren. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, his sister-in-law Jeannette Smith and one brother Elmer Smith. Pastors Alvin Cox and Eleanor Pottschmidt will conduct services at 11:00am Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1977 South State Road 135 in Greenwood. Visitation will be 4:00pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens where military rites will be accorded.
