Virgil Lee Vandagriff, aged 82, of Mooresville, passed away on December 13, 2024 in the presence of his son, Dean and beloved dog, Chloe. Born on September 30, 1942 in Indianapolis, he was the beloved child of Leland and Rosa Vandagriff and a 1960 graduate of George Washington High School, Indianapolis, IN.  In 1964 Virgil married Charlene Collins.  Virgil and Charlene have two children, Dean and Deanne.
In 1965, Virgil joined the Marion County Sheriffs Department. During his distinguished career, Virgil solved numerous homicide cases. In the 1980s he began broadening his investigative tools to include hypnosis and polygraph. He earned a reputation for mentoring others and dedicated his life to serving the community as a police detective and later as a private investigator.
Virgil opened Vandagriff and Associates in 1983, providing polygraph and pre-employment screenings and private investigations. He was particularly known for being the private investigator who made the connection between missing family members and serial killings occurring in Westfield Indiana, an investigation which led police to the Herb Baumeister case in 1996.
Virgil was preceded in death by Charlene Vandagriff-Blines, life partner Anna Whitehouse and daughter, Deanne (Vandagriff) Sanders. He is survived by his son, Dean, daughter-in-law Cyndi, grandchildren Nicole Wolfe, and Bryce Sanders, and grandchildren by marriage, Callie Bazley and Adam Stahl, and several great-grandchildren. Outside of work, Virgil enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, his dog Chloe and watching local sports. Virgil's commitment to justice and unwavering integrity will be remembered by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held on December 26, 4-8 PM, and December 27 at 12:30 PM with funeral services following, at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1977 South State Rd. 135, Greenwood IN.
