Mr. William Robert 'Bob' McWhirter, Indianapolis, passed away on the morning of Thursday, July 21, 2022. He was 85. Bob was born October 16, 1936 in Bethpage, Tennessee, a son of the late Clifford H. and Avie G. (Linville) McWhirter.
Bob attended schools in Tennessee before coming to the Indianapolis area. He had been employed in the cafeteria at Eli Lilly and Company and retired in 1992 after over 35 years of dedicated service.
Bob spent his leisure time visiting the casino, bowling and playing billiards. He also liked reading, particularly the Reader's  Digest and of late he discovered Facebook which kept him entertained for hours. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed raising his vegetable garden. A sports enthusiast, he followed the Indianapolis Colts, Cincinnati Reds and IU basketball.
Bob dearly loved his family and looked forward to the time he could be with them at family gatherings.
Bob is survived by children, Tim (Jan) McWhirter, Donnie McWhirter and Bob (Richelle) McWhirter; his grandchildren, Josh (Meghan) McWhirter, Blaise (Larmie) McWhirter, Ashlee (Chris) Yoder, Garrett (Andrea) McWhirter, Dillon (Cora) McWhirter, Courtney (Joey) Burke, Cassidy McWhirter and Matthew McWhirter; 11 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in passing by his loving wife of 47 years,Velma Willena McWhirter; his grandson, Adam McWhirter; his siblings, Helen Taylor, Lewis McWhirter, Edwin McWhirter, James McWhirter and Melvin McWhirter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm, Thursday, July 28, 2022 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Greenwood, with Pastor Darrell Ewing officiating. He will be laid to rest beside his wife at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home.
