Born on May 17th, 1923, in Grenada, Mississippi, Bill was one of six children born to J. Issac and Ruby (Smith) Spears. After graduation from high school, Bill enlisted in the US Navy in 1941 and was a hospital corpsman. While in the Navy and stationed in Hawaii, Bill was quite an accomplished pitcher for the Navy baseball team at Pearl Harbor. Among his teammates were Joe DiMaggio and Pee Wee Reese. Finch, who was also in the Navy. Upon completion of his military duty in Great Lakes, Illinois, he and Charlotte moved to her hometown of Hamilton, Ohio. There he worked for General Motors at the Fisher Body Plant as a supervisor in the production control and scheduling department for 33 years, retiring in 1986. Bill, a man of faith, accomplished much in his life including being a commander of the American Legion Durwin Schantz Post #138. Bill was a wonderful husband and loving father. On of his greatest joys was his family, friends and grandchildren. Bill and Charlotte had one son, William A. (Brenda) Spears. He was known as "Big Bill" to his friends and grandchildren, Jason (Nadine) O''Connor and Jennifer (Christian) O''Connor-Macias. To his great grandchildren Marquis, Madelyn, Evan, Ella and Ava, he was known as "Pop Pop". He had a fondness in his heart for his great niece Melissa and her children, Cole, Abbi and Jase Holden. Bill is also survived by a brother Bobby (Francis) Spears and Ruth (Norman) Pitcock and many nieces and nephews. Bill was loved by everyone who knew him and will be greatly missed by all.
